Science Fair:

The science department asks that we remind you that all materials for science fair boards must be in by this Friday.  If a project is not turned in, this will count as a zero for a test grade.  We are no longer selling tri-fold display boards at school so be sure and go pick one up if you have not yet purchased one.  The teachers have done a remarkable job helping students research, type, organize, create charts, and now will help them put this all together.  Your only responsibility through all this is helping with the actual experiment, helping collect that data, and purchasing a board.   Thanks for jumping on this if it has not been done yet.

The library is geared up for the start of the Book Fair on February 11. There will be daily drawings for free books and posters and also two jar guessing activities for any students who purchase a book! Remember to save your allowance, support you school library media center, and BUY A GREAT BOOK! Thanks

Debbie Cooley

AND, the book fair is tied into other subject areas as well.  The students will go with their math classes next week.  They will have to calculate the tax on their purchase.

Counselor’s Corner

Mrs. Yates is pleased that the 6th grade has completed the life skills program for this school year. All eighteen life skills have been covered through classroom guidance.  The students have been great listeners during class and have learned to show good character.  The character awards were given out last week for students who are flexible and also have a good sense of humor.  These are great characteristics to have!  Our 5th grade students finished up the lessons on Relationships and received their awards. Their current life skill is common sense.  Mrs. Stone is working hard to log all the 5th grade on SCOIS, which is a great career planning program.   Please view the online names of our character award winners for both grade levels.  We would like to thank the parents who completed the survey of the school counseling program. If you have not turned this in, we welcome you to still do this.

HELP! HELP! The Odyssey of the Mind team needs your help!  Our mission is to design a car that can complete an obstacle course.  We are in need of the following supplies: an old bicycle, screws, nails, spare wood, plywood, any craft items, cloth, an electric leaf blower, lawnmower, fan, etc, and costume jewelry.  Your donations are greatly appreciated!  If you have anything to donate, please send to Mrs. Slater’s room (107) or Mrs. Strickland’s room (401).  Thank you!

The Puzzler:  Lindsey and Courtney used their new boxes of stationary to write letters for Valentine’s Day.  Lindsey wrote three-page letters, Courtney wrote one-page letters.  Courtney used all the envelopes in her box and had 50 sheets of paper left over.  Lindsey used all the paper in her box and had 50 envelopes left over.  If the two boxes were exactly the same, how many sheets of paper were in each box?

Nothing wrong ever happens at the right time.

February 26 – Science Fair!  6:00 p.m.

Last week's puzzler: Only one person guessed – 64 oranges, but the answer is only 16 oranges.

(Four baskets of fruit with a total of 84 oranges.  The 5th has 4 fewer oranges than the average of the total 5 – how man in the 5th basket?)   The answer is 16 oranges.    84 + x oranges divided by 5 gives the average.  The 5th has 4 less than the average so x = [ (84 + x) / 5] – 4.

ABCs of Student Success
A is for Attendance

Attendance is a critical factor in any child's school success. Children should attend school every day, except in cases of illness or emergency. It is impossible to replace the learning that happens on any school day with make-up work. Regular attendance and promptness are good habits that are expected and appreciated at all levels of schooling and in the workplace. This year, make school a priority in your household. Commit to excellence in attendance. Your child's future depends on it!
