Math at Home
Super Sums
Use only the 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, and aces (1s) from a deck of cards. Each player writes the numbers 1-12 on a piece of paper. Then each player picks two cards and adds up the numbers on them. The player can mark off the sum on the paper or cross off the two numbers on the cards. Who will be first to cross off all 12 numbers on the list?

Counselor’s Corner

Opening and Closing of School – Announcements will be made over the radio and TV.  WSPA 950 is the station that normally announces it first.  Delays and closings will also be posted on our website, www.bsisonline.com.  Please do not call the school or district office.  We need to keep these lines of communication open in order to expedite decisions concerning your child’s safety.  If we are on a one hour delay, the building will open at 8:00 and school will begin at 9:05.  If we are on a two hour delay, the building opens at 9:00 and school begins at 10:05.

Stay aware!  March Of Dimes is coming soon!  More information to follow!

We hope everyone has kicked 2008 off to a great start! As we settle back in to the routine of school, please remember to show good character not only here at school, but in the community as well. Our 6th graders will be covering flexibility and sense of humor over the next few weeks during Guidance. Our 5th graders will be covering relationships.  Please view the names of our character award winners for both grade levels online.  Also, please be sure to fill out the parent survey that is attached to the newsletter or available online.  These will be used to assess the counseling program for future needs within the school. Please return the survey to Mrs. Yates by email or by hardcopy.  Thanks so much and have a happy new year.

Gentle Reminder: Please remember to pull ALL the way forward in the car line when picking up or dropping off.  It speeds things up enormously for everyone if we can completely fill up the line.   Thank you.

PAWS will NOT be available Jan 11, Friday afternoon.

Reminder:  If you are planning on purchasing a science fair display board through the school, be sure to do so as soon as possible.   Though we have ordered 350 boards, most have been sold.  We are not ordering any more unless a need develops.  Let your child’s teacher know this week if you plan to purchase a board.

Knowledge is one thing that doesn’t become secondhand when used.

The Puzzler: Our last winner!  2.)Bly's trip quicker than Fogg's:  7days 17 hours 48 min. and 46 sec.  Dennis Kitchko  However, there are 204 squares on a checkerboard!

The Puzzler:   Determine the value for A, B, C, and D (all positive integers) given:

A x B = 24

A + B = 14

A x D = 192

B x C = 6

C x D = 48

BSIS Art Show – Thursday, Jan 24 5:30 – 7:00 pm.  All 5th grade students will have one piece of framed artwork on display in the gym.

We are excited to announce our partnership with Spartanburg County Adult Education in bringing a GED Program to our Young Adult Population (YAP) (ages 17-21) starting the week of January 21, 2008.

In addition we are also the recipient of a grant from AT&T which will allow us to also serve the general population with a GED program, also beginning in January.

Also, we will begin basic computer literacy classes as well as ESL on Saturday’s beginning in January.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give me a call.

The Puzzler #1: How many squares are on a traditional 8x8 checkerboard?  (The answer is not 64!)

The Puzzler #2: On Nov. 14, 1889, Nellie Bly set off on a trip around the world.  Her goal was to make the trip in less than Phileas Fogg’s fictional 80 day trip.  It took 72 days, 6 hours, 11 min. 14 sec. to make the trip.  How much quicker was her trip than Fogg’s?
