New Puzzle:

The third exit on a highway is located at milepost 40, and the tenth exit is located at milepost 160.  A service center on the highway is located ¾ of the way from the third to the tenth exit.  At what milepost would you expect to find the service center?

Puzzle 2:

The average age of the 40 members of a computer science camp is 17 years.  Of those attending 20 are girls, 15 are boys, and 5 are adults.  If the average age of the girls is 15 and the average age of the boys is 16, what is the average age of the adults?

Often it is the simple things we miss.  I was helping a student the other day and realized after a few minutes of working on averaging that he knew part of the process but didn’t know one of the steps thus making his answers all incorrect.  Our teachers are trained to look for those small errors, but some slip through the cracks.  Parents can help here.  Math, especially, is a skill we all use constantly – balancing checkbooks, calculating gas prices, using recipes in the kitchen.  Ask your child to explain the process to you – S/he will have a few minutes of quality time with an important person (you!) and learn that you also value mathematical knowledge.

Westward Movement 3rd person limited omniscient – by Anthony Baldinelli -5th grade

In the 1820’s, James Wilson Marshall headed west with his farmer dad but he wanted to be a gold miner.

Aug 2, 1837: James’ dad died and grief overtook him.  James didn’t know what to do.  He didn’t have a mom either.  James was trying to get over this when he looked into the water and saw a gold nugget.  After that, people came from all over to look for gold.  James searched for more gold but had no luck.

July 18, 1845:  James became a carpenter but when he found he was only getting paid 5 cents an hour, he quit.  A troop captain asked if he could fight in the Mexican American War.  He did, was shot in his arm, walked to the hospital and got it fixed.  Then he went home. At home, someone had stolen all his cattle and with no money or cattle, he lost his land.  Everywhere he looked for work, he was turned down.

May 21, 1884:  James traveled in a wagon train back to California.  There he drifted from place to place exploring.  Some remembered him from 1837 and how he found gold.  While he was exploring, he died.  His friends would always remember him.

It would take 40 minutes to hard-boil an ostrich egg.

Perhaps the reason there is no fool like an old fool is because that, too, takes practice.
Tiger Traits:  Be likable.

What is coaching?   Perhaps you heard more schools have instructional coaches.  In case you wondered, here is a job description: Coaching is an opportunity for professionals to reflect upon decisions that impact classroom instruction, with a goal of continuous improvement to increase student learning.  Coaching involves listening, observing, questioning, and offering support to help teachers grow, reflect, and produce effective instructional decisions.

Last week:  Tania’s math book and science book are open on her desk.  She sees that the even page number showing in the science book is half the even page number showing in the math book and that the sum of the four visible page numbers is 926.  What page numbers are showing in her math book?   Pages 308 and 309.  The left hand page is always even numbered so if n is the even numbered page in the science book, then the right hand page in that book is n + 2.  The open pages in the math book will be 2n and  2n + 1.  The sum of all four pages is n + (n + 1) = 2n + (2n + 1) which is 6n + 2 = 926.   Therefore 6n = 924, n – 154 so 2n – 308 and 2n + 1 = 309
