I want to thank everyone for all the help with the penny drive. We have deposited close to $600 and have a lot more to count! Wilkie’s class is doing awesome. Just when I think we’re caught up counting all his money, his rep brings me another full jar! POD 4 is really competitive …all 5 classes are bringing in loads of pennies! The penny drive ends next Tuesday.  Ms. Brenner

Counselor’s Corner

Over the few weeks, the 6th grade students will be discussing Cooperation and Patience during their guidance lessons.  Mrs. Yates wants to congratulate the 6th grade character award winners from last week. Remember, every two weeks we will continue to award students for being a “Shining Star!”  The 5th grade students continue to discuss the life skill, Integrity, and they will be rewarded this week for demonstrating that character.

Please enjoy the pictures from Red Ribbon Week, available online. We had great participation this year, thanks to the students, faculty, and staff.

With Halloween coming this week, the Dept of Consumer Affairs has asked us to pass along to South Carolina public schools a warning about the possible health consequences of kids wearing decorative contact lenses. The contact information at Consumer Affairs is included. Attach 1, Attach 2
Math Puzzler:
I am a prime number greater than 40 and less than 90.  My ones digit is also a prime and so it my tens digit.  If you subtract my ones digit from my tens digit, the answer is not “2”.  What number am I?

When school ends at 2:30, Jacob starts to walk home at a rate of 3 mph.  His brother leaves 5 minutes later and walks at 3.6 mph.  What time will he catch up with Jacob?

Socks

By: Morgan Hunt

Socks, socks, socks

My fuzzy, wuzzy socks

Shoes, shoes, shoes

They hide my fuzzy wuzzy socks

Pants, pants, pants

My light denim pants

That cover my shoes,
That hide my socks

Shirt, shirt, shirt

My red, white and lbue shirt

That’s over my pants

That covers my shoes

That hide my socks

Hair, hair, hair

Long and flowing in the breeze

That covers my shirt

That is on top of my pants

That covers my shoes

That hides my socks

Socks, socks, socks.

How to be Happy: 1) Learn to appreciate.  You can hold good feelings by savoring.  Be fully present and you’ll appreciate even everyday events.  The ability to see the ordinary with a sense of wonder is essential to contentment.

That is why the Upstate Family Resource Center is partnering with the United Way of the Piedmont and the IRS in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.  We will prepare taxes for families who qualify within a certain income range free of charge at the Center.  January – April 2008.  Volunteers will be able to help set the flexible schedule for preparing taxes.  There will also be other financial services available to these families to assist with financial planning/budgeting/saving.  We are looking for volunteers for this program.  If you would like to prepare taxes, there is an online self paced certification process through the IRS (don’t let this scare you, it is not as difficult as it sounds) that you can begin right away and some other training during the month of December.  I am attaching a volunteer form.  If you are interested please fill it out and fax it in.  You can start the certification process right away by going to https://mail.spartanburg2.k12.sc.us/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.irs.gov/ and search for Link & Learn.

Thank you so much for considering this opportunity to strengthen our community and for passing it along to those who might be interested.  Please call with questions.

We will also have a flyer later in the year advertising this program.
